Most of what people “know” about mattresses is wrong: you do not have to replace one every eight years, firmer is not better for your back, modern memory foam does not sleep hot, a topper cannot fix a sagging bed, latex does not cause allergies, price does not equal quality, and a perfect mattress will not stop you moving at night. Here are the seven myths we hear most often in our Toronto showroom, and what is actually true.

The seven myths, busted

  • Replace every 8 years? Replace when it stops supporting you.
  • Firmer is better for backs? Medium-firm is, for most people.
  • Memory foam sleeps hot? Old foam did; gel, copper and open-cell foams do not.
  • A topper fixes anything? Only a too-firm bed, never a sagging one.
  • Latex triggers allergies? Latex resists dust mites and mould.
  • Expensive means better? Specs mean better; price often means marketing.
  • The right mattress stops tossing and turning? Movement is normal; the right bed just makes it easy.

How Mattresses Affect Your Sleep and Health

The right mattress supports your body, keeps your spine aligned and relieves pressure, which means deeper sleep, fewer aches and a better mood in the morning. The wrong one, or a worn-out one, does the reverse: pressure points, a curved spine, stiff joints, and for older sleepers a real risk of back injury from a sagging bed. A neglected mattress can also harbour dust mites and allergens that affect breathing and skin. That is why the myths matter; they lead people to the wrong bed.

Myth 1: Mattresses Must Be Replaced Every 8 Years

Eight years is a manufacturer’s estimate, not a rule. Lifespan depends on construction, quality, how many people sleep on it and how it is cared for: an all-foam bed may be done in six years, a quality hybrid lasts ten to twelve, and a two-sided flippable mattress twenty. Replace based on signs, not the calendar: lumps or dips, squeaky springs, morning sneezing (allergens), stiff muscles on waking, or sleeping better in other beds. Our guide on how often to replace your mattress covers all the signs.

Myth 2: Firm Mattresses Are Always Better

The old advice for back pain was the hardest bed you could find. In fact a very firm mattress does not follow the natural curve of the spine. For side sleepers it creates pressure points at the shoulders and hips; for everyone it can leave the lower back unsupported and misaligned. For most people a medium-firm mattress with zoned support, often called an orthopedic mattress, distributes weight evenly, reduces strain on the neck and back and keeps the spine aligned. Heavier back and stomach sleepers are the exception who genuinely benefit from firm or extra-firm. See best mattress for back pain.

Myth 3: All Memory Foam Mattresses Sleep Hot

Early memory foam was dense with no air channels, and it did trap heat. Modern memory foam uses open-cell structures for airflow and gel, copper or graphite infusions that conduct heat away, and in a hybrid it sits over a breathable coil core. Much of the “hot bed” problem is also not the mattress: a solid platform that blocks airflow underneath, non-breathable sheets and protectors, and heat-retaining pillows all raise your temperature. See our cooling mattress guide.

Myth 4: A Mattress Topper Can Fix Any Mattress

A topper adds a layer of cushioning. It can make a too-firm but structurally sound mattress more comfortable. It cannot restore support to a bed that is sagging, has broken coils or has simply worn out; it sinks into the dip with you. If the mattress is old, unsupportive or the wrong firmness for your body, the fix is a new mattress, not a layer on top.

Myth 5: Latex Mattresses Trigger Allergies

The opposite is true. Natural latex is inherently resistant to dust mites and mould, the two biggest bedroom allergens, and organic latex mattresses are made without the chemical treatments used in some synthetic foams. For most allergy sufferers a latex mattress is one of the best choices available. The rare exception is a diagnosed latex allergy, which is worth discussing with your doctor, although the latex is sealed inside the mattress. See organic mattresses.

Myth 6: Higher Price Equals Better Quality

Price reflects materials and construction, but also advertising budgets, commissions and brand premiums. A $3,000 mattress can feel identical to a $1,200 one with the same coil count and foam density. Judge by what is inside: pocket coils, foam density, latex content, edge support and warranty, and by how it suits your position and body, not by the tag. More in are expensive mattresses worth it?

Myth 7: The Right Mattress Will Stop You Tossing and Turning

Changing position during sleep is normal; most people shift dozens of times a night in response to pressure, temperature or a slight ache, without ever waking. A good mattress does not eliminate movement, it makes it effortless: you reposition without waking yourself or your partner. Constant restless waking is different, and usually points to pressure points, heat or a partner’s movement, all of which the right bed does fix.

Frequently asked questions

Is it true you should flip your mattress regularly?

Only if it is two-sided. Most modern mattresses are one-sided and should be rotated head-to-foot every 3 to 6 months, never flipped.

Do mattresses double in weight from dust mites?

No. That claim is a myth; mattresses do accumulate dust and skin cells, which is why a protector and regular vacuuming matter, but nowhere near that scale.

Can a mattress cure back pain?

It can relieve pain caused by poor support or pressure, which is very common. It cannot treat underlying conditions such as disc problems, which need a doctor.
