A natural latex mattress needs less maintenance than almost any other type, but the little it needs matters: rotate it every 3 to 6 months, keep it under a breathable waterproof protector, spot-clean with mild soap and water only, give it a firm, well-ventilated base, and keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Do those five things and a quality latex mattress will comfortably last 15 years or more. Here is each step in detail, including the mistakes that shorten latex’s life.

Key takeaways

  • Rotate 180 degrees every 3 to 6 months; flip only if the mattress is built two-sided.
  • Use a breathable, waterproof protector; latex must not be sealed in plastic.
  • Clean gently: mild detergent, lukewarm water, blot, air dry. Never soak, never harsh chemicals.
  • Support: slats no more than 3 inches apart, hardwood, centre support on queen and king.
  • Keep it cool and dry: 15 to 22°C, 30 to 50% humidity, no direct sun, no electric blankets on high.

A natural latex mattress is an investment in sleep quality, and a little proactive care keeps it delivering for a very long time. Latex is naturally resilient and resistant to dust mites and mould, so most of the work is simply avoiding the few things that damage it.

1. Regular Rotation

Rotate the mattress 180 degrees every 3 to 6 months so the heavier torso and hip area is not always loading the same spot. If your mattress is built two-sided, such as Dreamstar’s Double Life Latex, flip it as well. Most latex hybrids are one-sided and should only be rotated; check the care label. Regular rotation keeps the surface uniform and prevents the gentle body impressions that even latex can develop over many years.

2. Use a Mattress Protector

Choose a protector that is:

  • Breathable: cotton, bamboo or a modern performance fabric. Latex breathes, and a plastic-backed cover traps moisture against it.
  • Waterproof without being airtight: modern laminated protectors block liquids while letting vapour through.
  • Hypoallergenic and machine washable, with a snug fit that does not shift.

A good protector keeps sweat, spills and skin oils out of the cotton and wool layers, which is what keeps the mattress fresh for its whole life. See our protectors and accessories.

3. Gentle Cleaning

  1. Identify the stain; fresh spills are far easier than set ones.
  2. Mix a mild solution: a few drops of pH-balanced, colourless detergent in lukewarm water.
  3. Spot test on a hidden area first.
  4. Blot, do not rub, with a soft cloth, then blot with clean water.
  5. Air dry completely with a fan, away from direct sunlight, before making the bed.

Never soak latex, never use bleach, solvents or harsh chemical cleaners, and never put it in direct sun to dry; all of these degrade the material.

4. Adequate Support

  • Platform or slatted base: hardwood slats no more than 3 inches apart, so the latex is supported evenly and air can circulate underneath.
  • Centre support: queen and king frames need a centre beam or leg to prevent the middle sagging.
  • Firm and level: an uneven or sagging base wears the mattress prematurely and can void the warranty.
  • Check periodically for loose or broken slats, and follow the manufacturer’s guidance on whether a box spring is suitable. Our bed frames and bases are matched to the mattresses we sell.

5. Temperature and Humidity Control

Latex performs best in a room between 15 and 22°C and 30 to 50% humidity. Extreme heat can soften and deform it; excessive humidity invites mould in the natural fibres around it. Keep the mattress away from radiators and direct sunlight, use electric blankets only on low settings and only if the manufacturer allows, and air the room regularly. In a humid Toronto summer, a fan or air conditioning protects the mattress as well as your sleep.

Why Choose Natural Latex

Properly cared for, natural latex offers durable comfort that outlasts memory foam by years, a healthier sleep environment free of the chemicals and allergens found in many conventional mattresses, and a responsive, cool feel. If you are not sure whether latex is right for you, our team can help in person at our North York showroom, and our guides on the benefits of a natural latex mattress and the best organic mattresses in Canada cover the details.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a natural latex mattress last?

Typically 12 to 15 years, and often longer with a protector, regular rotation and a proper base. Two-sided latex mattresses can last 20 years.

Can you vacuum a latex mattress?

Yes, gently, with the upholstery attachment on low suction, every couple of months. It removes dust from the cover without affecting the latex.

Can I put a latex mattress on the floor?

Not long term. Latex needs airflow underneath; on the floor, moisture collects and can lead to mould. Use a slatted base or a platform with ventilation.

Does latex sag?

Far less than foam. Natural latex springs back for years; slight softening where you sleep is normal, and rotation keeps it even.
